CAPS Homeschooling Grades R to 9
Detailed, CAPS-aligned guidance for every grade from Grade R to Grade 9, organised by educational phase.
- Grade R (Ages 5-6 years) — Grade R introduces your child to structured learning through activities that feel like play. Our curriculum develops early literacy, numeracy, and social skills in a way that respects how young children actually learn - through exploration, movement, and hands-on discovery.
- Grade 1 (Ages 6-7 years) — Grade 1 is the year everything clicks. Your child will move from recognizing letters to actually reading, from scribbling to writing sentences. Our curriculum breaks these big leaps into manageable daily steps with clear instructions for you every step of the way.
- Grade 2 (Ages 7-8 years) — Grade 2 builds on foundation skills with increasing independence. Your child will transition from 'learning to read' to 'reading to learn,' tackle more complex maths problems, and begin structured research and writing projects.
- Grade 3 (Ages 8-9 years) — Grade 3 is a crucial consolidation year. Your child will cement reading, writing, and maths skills before transitioning to the Intermediate Phase. Our curriculum ensures thorough preparation without rushing - we'd rather have solid foundations than shaky progress.
- Grade 4 (Ages 9-10 years) — Grade 4 marks the shift to distinct subjects with their own textbooks and teaching approaches. It's a big change for learners and families. Our curriculum eases this transition with clear organisation and realistic expectations.
- Grade 5 (Ages 10-11 years) — Grade 5 deepens subject knowledge while developing crucial independent learning skills. Your child will handle more complex texts, longer writing assignments, and multi-step mathematical reasoning.
- Grade 6 (Ages 11-12 years) — Grade 6 completes the Intermediate Phase with a focus on consolidating skills and preparing for the increased demands of Senior Phase. Your child will demonstrate mastery across all subjects and develop the maturity needed for Grade 7.
- Grade 7 (Ages 12-13 years) — Grade 7 begins the Senior Phase with significant academic increases. New subjects like EMS and more demanding content across all areas challenge learners to grow. Our curriculum provides clear structure for this important transition.
- Grade 8 (Ages 13-14 years) — Grade 8 builds on Grade 7 foundations with increased content depth and analytical demands. Learners refine study techniques, develop stronger subject preferences, and prepare for the subject choices that lie ahead.
- Grade 9 (Ages 14-15 years) — Grade 9 is the final year of General Education and Training (GET). It's a pivotal year where learners consolidate all prior learning and demonstrate mastery across all subjects. Our curriculum ensures thorough preparation and a solid educational foundation.
