Mastering Foundations Before the Big Leap
Grade 3 is a crucial consolidation year. Your child will cement reading, writing, and maths skills before transitioning to the Intermediate Phase. Our curriculum ensures thorough preparation without rushing - we'd rather have solid foundations than shaky progress.
Quick Facts
- Phase: Foundation Phase
- Age range: 8-9 years
- Weekly commitment: 20-22 hours
Readiness Requirements
Grade 2 completion with fluent reading, paragraph writing ability, and solid understanding of basic operations. This is the year to fill any gaps before subjects become more specialized in Grade 4.
Learning Outcomes
By year-end, learners will read and comprehend grade-level texts independently, write structured essays with introduction, body, and conclusion, calculate confidently with all four operations, and complete multi-step problem solving. They're ready for the subject-based approach of Grade 4.

Assessment Approach
Termly formal assessments with ANA-style papers to prepare for future external assessments. Portfolio assessment, project work, and practical assessments. All results tracked against CAPS requirements with detailed feedback.
Parent Role
Your role shifts toward facilitating rather than direct teaching. About 4-5 hours of structured learning daily. You'll check work, discuss ideas, and support independent learning. Teaching reading comprehension strategies and problem-solving approaches becomes key.
Teacher Support
Curriculum materials include assessment guidance, transition tips, and support resources. We help identify any areas needing strengthening before Grade 4 begins.
Weekly Structure
Daily structured lessons in all subjects. Increased project work and research tasks. Regular assessment practice. Preparation activities for Intermediate Phase expectations.
