Building Strong Foundations Through Play-Based Learning

Grade R introduces your child to structured learning through activities that feel like play. Our curriculum develops early literacy, numeracy, and social skills in a way that respects how young children actually learn - through exploration, movement, and hands-on discovery.

Quick Facts

Readiness Requirements

Your child should be turning 5 in the year they start Grade R. They don't need to know letters or numbers yet - that's what we're here to teach. Basic self-care skills (using the toilet independently, eating without help) and the ability to separate from parents for learning time are helpful starting points.

Learning Outcomes

By year-end, learners will recognize all letters and their sounds, count confidently to 100, write their name and simple words, understand basic shapes and patterns, and have developed the fine motor skills needed for writing. They'll also have built the social skills for group learning.

Assessment Approach

No formal tests at this stage. We use observation-based assessment, portfolio collection, and developmental checklists. You'll receive detailed progress reports each term showing exactly where your child is developing and what to focus on next.

Parent Role

You'll spend about 2-3 hours daily working through activities with your child. The curriculum tells you exactly what to do and say - no teaching degree required. Many activities involve songs, games, and hands-on materials. Your job is to create a consistent routine and make learning feel safe and fun.

Teacher Support

Our curriculum includes parent guides explaining the 'why' behind each activity so you can adapt confidently. Support resources help with developmental concerns, activity modifications, and progress tracking.

Weekly Structure

Five learning days with a balance of structured activities and free play. Each day includes literacy (stories, letter work), numeracy (counting, sorting), life skills (creative activities, physical movement), and outdoor exploration time.
